What are Senneh Rugs?
Senneh (Sehna) rugs are a type of Persian rug woven in the northwest region of Iran in the province of Kurdistan.
Designs in Senneh Rugs
Many Senneh rugs may have a single medallion in diamond format or an all-over design featuring the herati pattern, all-over boteh patterns. These designs have since been mimicked in both Tabriz and Bidjar rugs.
Colors in Senneh Rugs
Red, blue, ivory, brown and beige are commonly used in Senneh rugs. Colors are typically rich and slightly darker than other Persian rugs.
Structure of Senneh Rugs
Senneh rugs are some of the thinnest types of Persian rugs. The pile is woven with a soft wool. The backside of Sennehs is notable due to it's rough texture which is a result of the tight knotting Senneh rugs are known for. Sennehs are single-wefted like Hamedan rugs and are woven with Turkish knots. Some Senneh rugs have silk foundations, and very few have dyed warps resulting in a rainbow on the fringe ends.
Smaller sizes are common, with larger sizes being harder to find.
Senneh Kilims
Special Kilims are woven in this area as well and are named Senneh Kilims. These flatwoven rugs are some of the best in Iran. They are very finely woven and may feature curvilinear designs and all-over patterns with or without medallions.
