Purple Oriental rugs are very popular with designers. In fact tones of magenta were so popular with the American market rug dealers began washing and painting Persian Sarouks and Lilihans to achieve the desired color.
Synthetic Purple Rug Dyes
Vintage Oriental rugs woven with wool dyed with synthetic purple can easily be identified by the greyish tone resulting from fading. The base of the rug will most likely still contain evidence of being purple but the surface of the pile will have taken on a grey-beige color. Purple tones are common in Turkish Spartas, painted Sarouks and Lilihans as well as many art-deco Chinese rugs.
