Green in Persian Rugs

Of all the colors, green is probably the least common color used in the field of antique Oriental rugs. Viewed as a holy color it was once used very sparingly. Green Oriental rugs are usually contemporary and woven recently. Green is common as a highlight color, especially in floral motifs as leaves or shrubs. Green wool was originally naturally dyed using turmeric berries or a mix of yellow and blue vegetable dyes which often caused noticeable gradiation. Green is thought to mean hope, renewal, life, and spring.
