Orange in Persian Rugs
Tones of orange in Persian rugs such as rust, salmon and peach are very desirable to collectors and rug dealers. Thought to mean devotion, piety and humility, orange is found in both modern Persian rugs and antique rugs.
Orange Rug Dyes
There was also a synthetic orange dye used in semi-antique rugs that was not very desirable. Tones of orange were acheived using vegetable dyes by diluting the madder root which was used to make red dye. Orange is commonly observed in Caucasian rugs and Persian Kurdistan rugs. It can sometimes take on a rust tone in certain antique Caucasian and Heriz carpets. Blue, red and brown complement it well.
