What Are Khamseh Rugs?
Khamseh rugs are tribal rugs woven in southern Persia. Khamseh was a confederation of five tribes in Southern Persia. These rugs are very similar to their neighboring Qashqai rugs.
Materials & Structure of Khamseh Rugs
Typically these rugs feature wool pile woven on a wool foundation. The foundation threads may have barberpole warps where two strands of different colored wool are wound together which adds an interesting bit of character. Khamsehs utilize the Hamedan weave with a single weft between rows of knots.
Colors & Designs in Khamseh Rugs
Stripes with tribal motifs inside, medallions, and some pictorial scenes may be observed in Khamseh rugs. Muted colors and earthy tones with blue, brown and ivory color schemes are popular among Khamsehs.
