What are Shiraz Rugs?

Shiraz rugs are a type of Persian rug woven in villages around the city of Shiraz. Shiraz is in the province of Fars in Southwest Iran.

The tribal patterns in these rugs mimics Qashqai rugs. Abadeh carpets closely resemble Shiraz rugs. Shiraz rugs typically have wool foundations while Abadeh carpets usually have cotton foundations.  They are woven with Persian knots and are not usually as fine as some of the other carpets mentioned above. 

 

Colors & Designs

Red and brown, are common colors in these rugs. Geometric medallions and patterns fill the field surrounded by smaller motifs that may include animal figures are common designs. Several pole medallions in the field is a common design among Shiraz rugs.
