Soumak rugs are named after the city of Shemakha. They are very easily identified by their weave. Unlike typical hand-knotted Oriental rugs, the design is only visible from the top. The reverse side has long strands of thread across it similar to the rug pictured below. Small animals are frequently woven among geometric medallions.
